Two for Joy
This selection of artworks, in vivid yellow, green and blue, explores the English rhyme that sees two magpies as a symbol of joy and good fortune.
At the base of a richly detailed tree, the pair stand together in the grass — a symbol of companionship and balance. Each version of the piece shifts through a different leaf palette — greens, yellows, and multicoloured reds — echoing the changing seasons and the many causes for joy in the natural world.
In green, the scene suggests a new start; in yellow, optimism and spark; and in the warmer red tones, the richness of life and acceptance of change.
The two magpies, ever watchful and playful, become emblems of curiosity, and connectedness — a reminder that joy often appears unexpectedly, and that our feelings, like the seasons, are always in motion.
“One for sorrow,
Two for joy,
Three for a girl,
Four for a boy,
Five for silver,
Six for gold,
Seven for a secret never to be told. “
